Agentic shopping gains a messaging channel
Amazon announced on 6 November that a small invitation-only group of US customers can text Alexa for Shopping to search for products, compare options, build carts, place approved orders and receive delivery updates. Amazon plans to extend access to millions more customers over the coming weeks. The assistant can interpret written requests and photos, remember stated preferences, monitor prices and carry a conversation between text messages, Amazon's shopping app, its website and Alexa-enabled devices. It can also surface products from other stores through Amazon's Shop Direct programme. Amazon says more than 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping during the previous 12 months, while use of agentic features grew more than eightfold since the start of the year. Those company-reported figures are not an independent measure of completed purchases, conversion quality or merchant economics, and the initial texting rollout remains limited.
What it means for merchants
Merchants exposed through Amazon or Shop Direct should audit product attributes, inventory freshness, fulfilment promises and return rules for conversational discovery, then monitor agent-originated orders separately for conversion, cancellations and unsuitable recommendations.
