Virtual-asset implementation faces faster review
The Financial Action Task Force said on 30 October that its plenary agreed to accelerate implementation of global anti-money-laundering standards in jurisdictions with materially important virtual-asset sectors. FATF plans a targeted review and faster follow-up process focused on gaps in supervision of virtual assets and service providers, with results scheduled for publication in June and October 2027. The initiative responds to concerns about fraud, sanctions evasion, money laundering and terrorist or proliferation financing through digital assets.
Scam compounds become a global priority
Members also approved work mapping the financial flows supporting scam compounds and agreed to make disruption of these networks a priority. A detailed report is due after the plenary. FATF removed Bulgaria, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Monaco from increased monitoring following on-site reviews, while updating its monitored and high-risk jurisdiction statements. Removal from increased monitoring does not eliminate merchant or counterparty risk; it means FATF no longer subjects the jurisdiction to that specific enhanced-review process.
What it means for merchants
PSPs and merchants serving crypto, cross-border or high-risk sectors should refresh jurisdiction screening, VASP due diligence and scam-related transaction monitoring. Do not translate list changes into automatic approval or rejection: combine FATF status with licensing, beneficial ownership, transaction purpose, sanctions exposure and actual control evidence.
