What was announced

The Federal Reserve Board released its 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances on 9 October. The survey examines American families’ assets, borrowing and banking, with a summary comparing 2022 and 2025. It is a periodic household-finance study, not a real-time measure of this week’s consumer spending.

Scope and limits

The Board reports that the share of families whose debt payments exceeded 40% of income rose from 6.5% to 8.6%. At the same time, real median family income increased 7% to $82,200, while real median net worth rose 2% to $215,900. These aggregate results show that improving headline financial measures can coexist with greater repayment pressure for some households.

Editorial analysis

What it means for merchants

Merchants should use this evidence as context rather than a prediction about individual customers. For subscription or instalment businesses, review your own failed-payment, cancellation and refund patterns by cohort. Keep prices and recurring commitments clear, and assess whether reminders and support help customers resolve problems. Historical household statistics cannot establish a shopper’s creditworthiness or justify assuming every consumer faces the same level of financial strain.
