Remittance funding moves closer to cash-reliant customers
Mukuru and Flash announced on 6 November that Mukuru remittance orders can now be funded through Flash's South African merchant network. The release describes 170,000 added cash pay-in locations, while Flash's current service page says its broader network exceeds 200,000 stores. Customers first create a Mukuru order through the app, WhatsApp, telephone or USSD, then take the order number to a participating Flash shop and pay in cash. The recipient can collect through a Mukuru payout partner or receive funds into an eligible bank account or mobile wallet. The expansion is designed to reduce travel to banks or dedicated payment outlets, particularly for customers in townships, peri-urban areas and rural communities. For participating shops, remittance funding adds another financial-service transaction to an existing merchant terminal, but the announcement does not disclose merchant commissions, settlement timing or cash-handling limits.
What it means for merchants
Flash merchants should confirm commission, reconciliation, cash limits, failed-payment handling and customer-support ownership before promoting the service, then track whether remittance visits generate repeat traffic without increasing cash-security exposure.
