Payment-rail selection moves into the agent workflow

Natural announced general availability of Direct on 29 October. The product lets an AI agent choose among ACH, wire and real-time payments over RTP or FedNow when paying a vendor, contractor or other counterparty. Payments originate from the same Natural wallet used for other money movement, while the business’s existing agent keys, limits and controls continue to apply. Natural says paper checks, international wires and additional rails are planned but are not yet available.

Speed, cost and finality still differ by rail

Natural positions runtime choice as useful when the payee, urgency or banking information is not known in advance. Its own product explanation distinguishes lower-cost, batch-settled ACH from instant and generally irreversible RTP and FedNow payments, and from wires used for larger or wire-only transactions. The product adds routing discretion but does not remove the underlying return, fraud, limit or finality characteristics of each rail. Natural is a fintech rather than a bank; banking services are provided through its partner institutions.

Editorial analysis

What it means for merchants

Merchants automating supplier or refund payments should treat the agent as a controlled operator, not an unchecked decision-maker. Set rail-specific value limits, approved counterparties, dual approval for irreversible transfers, exception queues and complete audit logs before allowing autonomous payment selection.
