Open-banking checkout broadens beyond the UK
Segpay announced on 6 November that its Pay by Bank option now covers Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. The TrueLayer-powered method lets customers approve a GBP or EUR payment directly from a supported bank account, using Faster Payments in the UK and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer in the EU. Segpay's current merchant documentation says payments typically settle within seconds and can be enabled on hosted payment packages after the merchant signs the relevant service addendum. Refunds are supported, and transactions appear in Segpay's reporting as real-time payments. The method is limited to one-time, digital-purchase and dynamic-pricing flows: it does not support recurring sign-ups, cross-sells or Segpay's One-Click Service. Customers are redirected to their bank to authorize each payment, so merchants should not treat it as a drop-in replacement for every card journey.
What it means for merchants
Merchants should test Pay by Bank against cards by country and device, measuring completion, settlement and refund times while keeping a separate payment method available for subscriptions, cross-sells and one-click repeat purchases.
