Agents receive bounded payment authority
Sunrate announced its Agentic Card on 2 November at Hong Kong FinTech Week. The programmable, multi-currency virtual commercial card is designed for authorised AI agents to create payment instruments, set transaction parameters, initiate transactions and retrieve outcomes while a business retains policy control. Administrators can set limits by amount, currency, geography, merchant category and validity period, and can issue a card that expires after a specified task.
Auditability is central to the design
The company says actions are recorded for review and that higher-risk exceptions can be blocked or escalated to people. It identifies procurement, travel, marketing and supplier payments as potential uses, with online travel businesses among the early examples. Sunrate also says the product has completed Mastercard Agent Pay certification. The announcement describes the product’s design and launch; it does not provide independent performance data or guarantee availability in every market.
What it means for merchants
Businesses testing autonomous purchasing should begin with narrow merchant categories, short-lived cards and low limits, then reconcile every agent instruction to an invoice or approved task. Certification and programmable controls help, but they do not replace accountability for erroneous purchases, compromised prompts, refunds or disputes.
