Direct-to-card reach expands
Thunes said on 2 November that its deeper alliance with UnionPay International now lets participating financial institutions, payment providers and money-transfer operators route instant cross-border payouts to UnionPay cards issued by 79 major banks in China’s mainland. The company identifies corridors including Africa, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States. Its release says the connection supports transfers of up to US$10,000 per recipient cardholder per day, reducing the need to split larger eligible payouts across multiple days.
Availability still depends on programme rules
The service is delivered through Thunes’ Direct Global Network and a direct UnionPay International connection. Thunes presents the higher capacity as an operational improvement for network members, but the announcement does not make the route universally available to every sender or card. Eligibility, compliance checks, participating institutions and corridor-specific requirements still govern whether a payout can use the new path.
What it means for merchants
Payment providers serving China-bound consumers should compare the new card-payout route with bank transfers on recipient coverage, limits, pricing, returns and compliance handling. Merchants or marketplaces considering it for seller disbursements should confirm that their use case qualifies, because the announcement is framed primarily around consumer payouts rather than general commercial settlement.
