A live bank-controlled pilot
U.S. Bank announced on 30 October that it completed a live cross-border pilot using USBDC, its proprietary US-dollar-backed stablecoin, between bank entities in North America and Europe. The token moved on the Stellar blockchain while connecting to the bank’s finance, risk, compliance and operations systems. The pilot tested minting, redemption, freezing and clawback functions through U.S. Bank’s internally developed Digital Asset Platform.
Institutional use remains exploratory
The bank says potential future applications include liquidity management, collateral mobility and cross-border treasury operations. It published the issuer address used for the pilot, but did not announce general client availability, reserve disclosures, transfer limits, pricing or a commercial launch timetable. The ability to freeze and claw back tokens distinguishes the design from permissionless cash-like instruments and may support compliance controls, while also creating operational dependencies on the issuer. A successful intercompany transaction proves technical execution in a controlled setting, not yet broad interoperability or merchant acceptance.
What it means for merchants
Businesses should treat USBDC as a pilot rather than an available settlement option and, if access expands, assess redemption rights, reserve transparency, issuer controls, wallet governance and how on-chain transfers reconcile to bank accounts.
