Agents move from recommendation to payment
Visa said the live pilot lets trusted AI agents act within business-approved parameters to pay invoices, rather than merely prepare a recommendation for a person. Tokenised payment credentials and controls are intended to constrain what an agent can do. The work connects Visa's network with BILL's accounts-payable platform and Billtrust's receivables capabilities, creating a practical test of agent-led B2B settlement.
Supplier intelligence and controls are developing in parallel
Visa also described SESA 2.0, which uses AI to help issuers evaluate suppliers, and three commercial-fraud capabilities: Supplier Validation, Virtual Authentication and Payment Controls. Payment Controls is available to eligible issuing financial institutions in supported markets, while the validation and authentication services are in pilot and are expected to become generally available in 2027. Those different maturity levels should not be conflated with the live invoice pilot.
What it means for merchants
Businesses testing agentic accounts payable should start with low-risk invoice classes and enforce explicit amount, supplier and frequency limits. Preserve human escalation, immutable approval logs and token-level revocation so automation cannot silently expand its own authority.
