Agent purchases become separately visible
Agent Profiles are scheduled to launch within a month. Customers will be able to authorize an AI assistant through a dedicated profile, see its purchases separately and require approval for every order or set a spending limit. Walmart says customers can disable a profile, and agents will not receive card details or be permitted to add or change payment methods.
A gateway is planned for developers
Walmart also plans a beta Agent Gateway using a model-context protocol to give agents a more reliable shopping connection than navigating consumer web pages. Its terms require agents to stay within shopper intent, limit access to permitted information and preserve Walmart’s returns process. The company may request added approval even when a transaction is within the customer’s stated limit.
What it means for merchants
Retailers building agentic checkout should separate agent identity from customer identity, make delegated limits revocable and retain a clear approval trail. Product, price, fee, return and inventory data should remain consistent across human and agent channels, with exceptions routed to a person.
