High card decline rates and low authorization rates

Define the metric first
Count unique payment attempts separately from retries. Compare similar cohorts by country, issuer, method, device and new versus returning customer. Stripe’s decline documentation distinguishes issuer declines, blocked payments and invalid API calls. A single failure percentage can hide very different problems and make a change appear successful simply because the traffic mix changed.
Locate the failing stage
Trace checkout initiation, authentication, authorization and capture using safe transaction references. Establish whether a request reached the processor and whether the issuer declined it. Review response and advice codes with the provider. Do not interpret a generic decline as proof that a customer lacks funds or that a different gateway will accept the same transaction.
Change one hypothesis at a time
Investigate malformed requests, unsupported currencies, authentication problems and overly broad rules with the relevant technical or risk team. Use controlled comparisons and monitor fraud, disputes and net collected revenue alongside acceptance. Respect retry guidance and do not switch off controls simply to improve a headline number.
What it means for merchants
Ask providers for evidence about your actual failure mix rather than a guaranteed uplift. Maintain a failure dashboard that separates technical errors, authentication abandonment, risk blocks and issuer decisions. Better measurement helps you direct the fix to the party able to resolve it.
Frequently asked questions
Are all failed payments issuer declines?
No. Failures can occur before authorization, including invalid requests, risk blocks or an incomplete authentication flow.
Should I retry every declined card?
No. Follow the provider’s decline and retry guidance. Some failures require customer action or should not be retried.
Does removing 3DS guarantee better acceptance?
No. Authentication requirements, issuer decisions and fraud exposure still matter. Assess changes within the permitted payment flow.
Will a second processor fix declines?
Only some issues may relate to the processing route. Diagnose the cause and confirm the alternate provider’s approved scope first.
What data should I send support?
Send timestamps, safe transaction IDs, error codes and reproduction details through the approved channel. Do not send full card details or secrets.
Which success metric should I use?
Track unique-attempt authorization alongside completed payments, fraud losses, disputes and net revenue, using comparable cohorts.
